At the final whistle on Sunday, which curtailed Chelsea's much-threatening come-back, English Football was still grasping the legacy, on the brink of which Manchester United now stand. One point from the remaining last 2 fixtures, and Manchester United will become the Best Football Club in English history.Officially.2 Decades ago, this would have seemed unimaginable. And there's one single man, responsible for this upheaval.Do I have to say out the name?
Most of our generation perhaps don't fully understand the magnificence of this achievement, even those who proclaim themselves to be hard-core devils.
But the Old Guard of United will certainly do.You have to go straight back to 1986 to fully realize his achievements. When Alex Ferguson(yeah, he wasn't a "Sir" at that time) was appointed as the manager of Manchester United, the team languished at 19th position in the league of 22,while Liverpool FC were THE Ultimate team, not only in England, but in whole of the Europe. They say it's a myth that Ferguson actually said at that time, that he wanted to upstage Liverpool. It would have been ridiculous to say that,on the backing of 7 League titles, all achieved quite a long way ago.But Ferguson admitted, that once they won their first title in 92-93, "it just started to flow".
For the past 2 decades, United have had some truly great players, but there should be no doubt who is the real boss at Old Trafford. David Beckham was considered one of the World's Best, when Ferguson decided his glamour-seeking was hurting the club.Beckham never managed to redeem himself after being sold to Real Madrid, while United weren't deterred one bit as Fergie easily found worthy replacements.Roy Keane, Ruud van Nisterooy, even Wayne Rooney threatened to join the list to be thrown away by Ferguson, before he finally found some common sense. You just don't mess with Fergie at Manchester United. The only exception would perhaps be Cristiano Ronaldo, whom Ferguson didn't really want to sell. But he was left with no choice,as the player insisted on the move to Madrid. But then, he himself is a Legend in the making, there.
There's no reason to think Ferguson is the flawless, most loved manager by any means though. He has used almost every available means on his way to success.Influencing referees, showing complete disregard to rules, well, showing complete disregard to the rest of the world sometimes.Never the one to accept a defeat gracefully, he has often blamed everything apart from his players for the losses. But guess what, it's worked.Brilliantly.H e takes away the entire focus away from his players, which makes it much easier for players to rejuvenate after the dis-appointments.
In a way, the way Manchester United played on Sunday versus Chelsea summed up Ferguson's approach to Football.Sheer Dare-Devilry. By no means, Ji-Sun Park or Antonio Valencia are the most talented players, forget the world, even in English Football. But the confidence they exuded, while taking on a team packed with superstars showed what Ferguson has done to them. The supreme one-touch passing they executed with such finesse, would be expected from a Xavi or an Iniesta, but surely not a Michael Carrick or Ji-Sun Park. Ferguson just makes them believe that they are out there just to win, that failure just isn't a possibility. The results was there for the world to see.
I must confess, I have not been a big fan of Sir Alex. Every time I watch his outrageous antics, his attitude of treating the remaining world inferior to himself, I have even thought that it is a disgrace to Football that Ferguson is so successful. But for the sheer greatness of his achievements, you have to salute the Magnum Opus of Sir Alex Ferguson.History has been made, Liverpool no more have those bragging rights now.Ferguson's chief mission has been accomplished.Watching the game on Sunday, I couldn't suppress a smile watching him bow to the Stretford End of Old Trafford.Being a die-hard Chelsea fan, I think that's the biggest compliment I can pay.

Any words required here?? Are the Merseysiders watching? |

Yet another Title, but it'll be much more special this time round! |

ReplyDeleteMan utd won becoz they were a better team..but my foccus is on chelsea and i believe chelsea can win more trophies...we need a manager who is desperate 2 win trophies like mourinho..m not saying carlo doesn't have it but d way chelsea started yesterday's game was dissapointing..given d same situation 2 mourinho n m sure he would have made a lot of difference...having said that Carlo should stay as chelsea manager n must unite d team..d decision of playing torres instead of drogba in cl said it all that he was believing on big names like torres n not on a world class striker like drogba...Carlo failed 2 make good strategies against utd n so we lost 3 consecutive games 2 utd...things have 2 change for CHelsea....a very dissapointing season even though a nice come back..utd were a better team this season n this had a disastrous season n i think carlo will go!!!!!carlo is a good manager n i want him 2 stay..he is very humble n respects evry1 n never complaints...a true Gentleman n i have huge respect for him!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHell lot of work still left for Fergie to do...i hope he will let Utd to Champions League Glory !!
ReplyDeleteYou have prejudice against ManU....star-power never works.....Team-work does.. Park Ji Sung is awesome on the field, just because he isn't a star doesnt make his less talented.....Antics?!?!? Influence?!?!---Howard Webb clearly favoured Chelsea that day!Yet Utd won, coz they were the better team.
ReplyDeletebura mat manna,
ReplyDeletemereko kuch nai samjha.......Dhiren
Fergie took charge in 86 if im not mistaken
ReplyDeleteit took him 6 years to build a team, nurture it, and finally win a title in 91. nowadays managers are seldom given time. look at ancelotti for instance. double winner in his first season, and he is going to be sacked for coming second!too bad..
@Sagar...my reference to many United fans not understanding this achievement was preciseley to someone like you...
ReplyDeletePark ji sUNG is not the most talented, even he'll agree..and that's what I have been saying, Team works matters, which is why United beat Chelsea!!!
and the whole world knows Fergie's antics...im not talkin abt this particular game, but his whole career, Ferguson has done that!By the way, even before this game, he DID try to influence the ref by constantly talking abt referereing decisions...:-P
I'll stick to the argument that 11 stars cannot beat ONE TEAM, in the true sense of the word.....also was so happy to see Luiz fall apart during the first goal!!
ReplyDeleteferguson does influence referees n also doesn't have big heart 2 accept defeat...he is a fantastic manager but this facts u have 2 acpt...
ReplyDeletehw can u play one touch football if u dnt hav da ability or the 'talent'.
ReplyDeletelets take park dis season..frm superbly guiding a header against arsenal..(have u seen his height...by da luk of it u havent) to controlling a giggs pass in one touch and smoothly guiding it into a corner against probably one among the greatest gk cech.....oh no dis isnt talent...dis is just some mental pedigree fergie has installed in em....a total talentless short asisan fraek who put the supremely talented chelsea stars out of da cl.....first stop da insults then go fr tributes mate..dats all i got to say
no team i mean no team can pas da ball out of da defence using silky one touch futbal...oh dats psychological advantage...poor talentless souls
ReplyDeletegoodness me,man....you took it totally wrong!!!
ReplyDeleteI have never claimed Park is a talentless footballer, but many would tend to consider a Wayne Rooney or even a Joe Cole to be more talented than him.....true,he has been a mammoth asset to united, but that's because of his work-rate,his readiness to work tirelessly, that;s why he was preferred to Nani in Chelsea game, who you would agree I hope, can produce much more trickery with the ball....
And basically the sleek one-touch football has never been as aspect of Park's game...he's a player like Dirk Kuyt, who work tirelessly for the team (which is much better to do than what many "Talents" do, I agree), I'm not claiming Park or anyone in that Utd team is talentless, I just pointed out that the passing they executed that day, was as good as Barca do at their best, which frankly you should admit, hasn't been United's forte...
ReplyDeleteThat's it, I honestly don't think I tried to insult anyone there....Hope, you are not offended!
